Nashville Cigar Tips for Cigar Smokers. Delicious Flavors with Similarities.

A little cigar knowledge from @nashvillecigar⠀”If you enjoy one of these three cigars, chances are you will enjoy them all. What do these three cigars from three completely different companies have in common? …big flavors of leather and cocoa! Plasencia Alma Fuerte, Diamond Crown Julius Caesar, and the Liga No. 9 are all excellent choices for luscious cocoa and a leathery finish.”

The Nashville Flood: Ten Years Later at The Frist Museum, Now through May 17, 2020.

0

On Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May 2, 2010, a record-breaking rainfall of over thirteen inches caused major flooding throughout Middle Tennessee. The Cumberland River crested almost twelve feet above flood stage, and smaller waterways such as Browns Creek, Mill Creek, Richland Creek, and the Harpeth River also flooded, wreaking havoc across the city. Thousands of homes and businesses, including the Grand Ole Opry, the Opryland Hotel, and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, were damaged or destroyed. Twenty-six people in the region died—eleven in Nashville. Despite the intensity of this historic event, it received little national media attention, primarily because of other compelling news stories and because—unlike some natural disasters—the recovery process was remarkably organized and smooth.

This exhibition features photographs and excerpts of oral histories from ten different neighborhoods—including Antioch, Belle Meade, Bellevue, Bordeaux, and others, in addition to downtown—to present a broad picture of both the destruction and the relief efforts. Parts of the story may be unfamiliar to Nashville’s many newcomers, as well as residents who were here in 2010 but may have been too preoccupied with their own situations to follow what was happening in other areas.

The items in this exhibition are sourced from the Nashville Public Library’s extensive flood archive and The Tennessean newspaper. As part of the exhibition, an interactive monitor illustrates the long-term impact of the flood by pairing photographs from 2010 with ones from 2020. In downtown Nashville, the recovery marked the beginning of a rapid construction boom that has transformed the city’s skyline. Several flooded areas became green spaces. In some areas, though, less progress is evident, signifying inequities in the rebuilding process. Many people, however, recall the heroic rescue efforts and the spirit of volunteerism from this event, which forever changed Music City.

Introducing Edwin Lockridge of POVA!

0

We love Poverty & The Arts Features. This is Edwin. “Edwin Lockridge joined the POVA Artist Collective in May 2019. When asked what he enjoys most about art-making, Edwin highlights the act of creation itself saying, “Creating, creating! It places me below God but above angels.” A Nashville native, Edwin has been experiencing homelessness for the past two years spending most of his nights in local parks. Edwin is a mixed media artist with over half a century of experience. He is most excited to use the revenue generated by his art sales to reinvest in his craft. “Creating art is the closest thing I know to being God; not that I want to be God but when God created, he made me a creator.”” Want to get involved with this fantastic organization click over to their website: povertyandthearts.org

Noir Fest 3 Now Taking Place Through January At Belcourt Theatre!

0

Belcourt Theatre is kicking off 2020 with a question. What is noir? Sweat on the brow of a hardened criminal cornered by the law? The plodding of desperate feet against wet concrete? A sliver of light splashed across the faces of two star-crossed lovers engaged in a final embrace? The two-faced dame holding a smoking gun just as easily as she holds the cigarette between her lips? Well sure, it’s all of these things, but it’s also so much more.

Noir Fest’s previous iterations at the Belcourt (in 2008 and 2011) centered on cornerstones of the genre from America, France, and England. While this latest installment features a number of familiar titles, the thrust of the series is towards the more granular, je ne sais quoi qualities of the genre. Focusing on the darkness of tone, the shattered mirror of post-war America reflecting on itself, and illuminating the moral complexities of new wars at home, some of these films might not immediately look the part, but they most certainly feel it.

Featuring 10 pairings throughout January and early February, the Belcourt shines a Venetian-blinded spotlight on this dynamic, modern and groundbreaking genre whose ripples can be felt throughout cinema to this day. Belcourt will also be hosting an introductory seminar on the stylistic and tonal foundations of noir, as well as a deeper dive into the genre, along with a number of film introductions to help make sense of it all.

Make 2020 the best year ever. Find a better path to better health that only Shakti Power Yoga Can Give! Find A Class This Week: www.shaktiyoganashville.com/

Shakti Power Flow

This heated class is inspired to ignite Shakti, the pure, boundless, creative energy within in each of us. The power vinyasa yoga practice is an invigorating, healing, detoxifying sequence that links movement of the body with the power of the breath. The practice is rooted in Baptiste Power Yoga, created by our teacher Baron Baptiste, and available to all, with modifications and variations of the poses. The practice builds strength, improves flexibility, magnifies your body’s energy, and calms your mind by focusing on the present moment and breath.

Community Power Flow classes are Shakti Power Flow classes for a $6 drop-in.

Shiva Vinyasa

For students newer to yoga or experienced students who wish to reconnect with key elements of their yoga practice, this unheated class focuses on the fundamentals with an emphasis on breath and alignment. Students will be introduced to postures like basic backbends, twists, binds, and have the opportunity for movement, meditation, and relaxation.

Yin Yoga

A style of yoga that focuses on opening the connective tissues in the body, cartilage, ligaments, and joints. Yin Yoga is an unheated class that involves holding deep stretches for longer periods of time – 30 seconds to several minutes – relaxing the body in the poses, and finding stillness. This opening into the deep, dense tissues of the body provides an expanded range of movement, healing and repair, lubrication of the joints, and opportunities for meditation. The energetic meridians of the body are believed to run in line with the body’s connective tissues, allowing you to clear and revitalize energetic pathways from your toes to your fingertips.

Restorative Yoga

Similar to Yin, this unheated restorative class with long holds compliments our Power Flow practice by relieving soreness and accumulated stress, improving posture and awareness of breath, and lengthening specific muscles in order to reestablish their ideal tone. This class offers a nourishing, opening practice that incorporates props such as bolsters, tennis balls, and blocks to facilitate healing, the release of tight muscles, trigger points, and surrounding connective tissues.

Awaken & Unwind

This gentle unheated vinyasa is designed to center, nourish and restore. A sweet slow flow is followed by a luxurious, extended savasana with healing essential oils. Leave feeling clear and refreshed for the week ahead.

Ashtanga Primary Series

This is an advanced, unheated practice and we advise that students have previous experience in vinyasa and/or ashtanga yoga asana. The Primary series as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois is practiced in its entirety at a group pace. This dynamic, precise, and progressive sequencing of yoga postures is accompanied by “free breathing with sound” as described by Sharath Jois. Quickly creating internal strength while resolving mental and structural imbalances this class includes full and half lotus positions, arm balances, back bends, and headstands.

Karma Power Flow

This is our only 100% cash or check, donation-based class. All of the proceeds from this class are donated to a local or global nonprofit organization whose mission and work inspires us. By attending this class and giving any amount, you are empowering these organizations to continue their work. Check out our blog to learn more about the nonprofits we work with.

Kids Yoga

This unheated class is designed to help create empowered and resilient children through the mindful practice of yoga.
Not only will children learn yoga poses, breathing techniques, and meditation; they will also learn about themselves and how they are a contribution.

Kids Yoga is held on Saturdays at noon in the Shiva Room. There is a Shakti Power Flow class that starts at the same time; parents or caregivers are welcome to join the practice downstairs while the little ones practice upstairs.

Foundations of Power

This unheated class was intentionally created to teach the foundations of the power yoga practice. We will breakdown poses to create True North Alignment and each class will have a focus on one of the pillars of the practice; breath, drishti, bandhas, tapas, or vinyasa. This class will empower you to create a strong, safe, and sustainable practice. Great for all levels and especially new yogis!

First Wednesday of every month at 6:15pm.
