Five Daughters Bakery offers a fine Vegan Donut to start your beautiful Friday Morning!

0

We went searching for donuts in East Nashville and we knew we wanted to try the Vegan Donuts we heard about from Five Daughters. We arrived and were greeted by a wonderful employee who showed us our three options in their vegan variety. Our options were the Purist a glazed variety which we had before. It’s a great donut for someone who doesn’t want all the icing. We really wanted this one but needed to try the other types. So our options came down to Strawberry Glaze or Lemon Blueberry. Although we tend to go for Lemon Blueberry the shops decor made our subconscience choose the Strawberry Glaze.

First off, this donut is sweet. Not in a bad way. The frosting on it will satisfy any sweet tooth and it’s heavy which satisfy any hunger. Would we suggest it as the first option when going for Vegan Donuts at Five Daughters? No, we wouldn’t. The Purist is still the leader but this is a wonderful option if you want a really sweet strawberry taste.

Birthdays, bachelorette parties, engagements, because it’s Wednesday…. So many gift ideas at Harlan Ruby!

0

Tis the Season to Celebrate at Harlan Ruby. It doesn’t matter the time of year, Harlan Ruby has a quirky and fun way to celebrate. Birthdays, bachelorette parties, engagements, Westworld Episode Four party, Preds are playing…. really if you need it to look festive and to pop with fun, Harlan Ruby can make it happen.

How they would Describe it!

Harlan Ruby is woman-owned and operated balloon, gift, party, stationery shoppe in East Nashville, Tennessee run by mother-daughter duo: Sunny Becks & Fiona Flaherty. The shoppe is ‘all color, all the time’ with approximately 50% of the products being produced in-house with a neighboring workshop for classes and parties.

Sunny spent most of her entrepreneurial years running a successful hula hoop business (classes and ultimately the world’s first hoop supply company) however, once her oldest daughter wrapped up her schooling at Parsons The New School for Design in NYC (and a small stint in LA) Sunny suggested Fiona launch her own brand back in her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.

Transforming the hoop shoppe into a retail location, they quickly put Fiona’s Fashion Illustration degree to use and self-produced a whimsical line of hand-illustrated, hand-lettered goods under the name Cheers Fifi. Today they continue their collaboration on other brands such as Idol Light and Nevertheless She Persisted while also producing small-batch runs for local artists.

While Harlan Ruby officially launched with 100% of the products being produced in-house, as the shop grew they began to incorporate colorful, sassy, heart-felt products inspired by the bright shops of Los Angeles Fiona fell in love with while living there. “We like to focus on colorful, forward-thinking/thoughtful companies from around the world to appeal to our people: grownups who aim to live life with a youthful atheistic”.

While the shop is still young, they have been attracting the attention of fabulous people like Kacey Musgraves and Elsie Larson (A Beautiful Mess). Now it’s your turn…

Come have fun with us! Hours: Monday – Friday 10-6, Saturday & Sunday 9-3. 805 Woodland Street, Suite 301 Nashville TN 37206.

Don’t forget to check their website out at www.harlanruby.com as well as follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

Potlikker Papers:

When I purchased Potlikker Papers I wanted to like it. I had met Mr. Edge at Southern Foodways Alliance events, read his writing and listened to him on the Gravy Podcast. I was not disappointed but was enthralled by each chapter. I don’t binge read many things but this book was able to tell Food stories through history of the south while also telling stories of the south through the plate. It’s a wonderful thing to see the south change before our eyes in Nashville but John shows that history started way before now. Also, that my love of Southern Food and West African food makes sense.

Davidson, Robertson, Sumner, Wilson, Rutherford, Williamson & Cheatham Counties have markers at The National Lynching Memorial.

0

The National Lynching Memorial opened this week in Montgomery, Alabama. If you search online, you will find the report produced by the Equal Justice Initiative (the people behind the memorial) which gives us the history of lynching in painful detail.

From 1877 to 1950, there were 233 lynchings in Tennessee.

While Shelby County led the state with 20 lynchings, Davidson County had 6 lynchings in that time period. Robertson County was the 4th highest with 11. Williamson and Sumner had 5, Rutherford 4 and Cheatham & Wilson County with one.

There is a steel monument hanging in the memorial engraved with the names of the six African Americans lynched in Davidson County, Tennessee. There is one with 11 names from Robertson, 5 from Williamson and Sumner, 4 from Rutherford and 1 from Cheatham & Wilson County. There is another copy of that monument laying in the park that surrounds the memorial waiting to be claimed by the people of Davidson County, Robertson, Sumner, Wilson, Rutherford, Williamson & Cheatham Counties. We’ve attached a video from the people who created this Memorial explaining why there was a need for this memorial.

James Shaw Jr. is a hero! Also, how to help the families of the victims.

James Shaw Junior is a hero. Not only did he disarm the Waffle House Shooter in Nashville. He has now set up a GoFund me to help support the families of the victims. Click the link to give:https://www.gofundme.com/5g07bvs

Background

James Shaw Jr. is a hero after he disarmed the man who opened fire on the Antioch Waffle House. Police and an eyewitness said Shaw’s actions prevented further bloodshed at the restaurant. During the shooting, Shaw said he saw his opportunity to take down the shooter after he felt cornered. Police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed Shaw Jr.’s actions, saying that he rushed at the shooter, disarmed him, and threw the assault rifle he was over a counter.

“When he heard the gunshots he ran back to restroom area,”Police Spokesman Don Aaron said. “He watched the gunman.

“He reported that he saw the gunman looking at his rifle. At that point, the shots had stopped,” Aaron said. “So he decided to rush the gunman, actually wrestled that assault rifle away (and) tossed it over the counter.

“At that point, the gunman then fled.”

Shaw Claims he was “Just Trying to Stay Alive,” and Doesn’t Consider Himself a Hero.

No offense to Mr. Shaw, but he’s a hero.
