Have you tried Hugh Baby’s Friday Slug Burger?

0

One thing buying local has taught us is that getting people out of fast food is a difficult task. Instead of fighting that Hugh Baby’s has taken the local care and love for the community and brought it to the fast food dining model. On Friday they offer a legend of a burger from Mississippi, The Slug Burger:

Made famous in Corinth, MS! Ground Pork and Soy Meal deep-fried and served with Pickles, Chopped Onions and Mustard.

Not only that they have wonderful menu items and some can be made Vegan. We also tried the Veggie Burger that is Vegetarian. Hold off on the Comeback sauce to be Vegan.

That’s why we’d love for you to try one of these:

Make sure you head to one of their Three Nashville Locations, 4816 Charlotte Avenue, 3001 West End Avenue or 718 Thompson Lane. Open seven days a week. Follow them on Facebook and/or Instagram.

Great Reads for Tweens for End of Summer! Our Kiddo gives her suggestions you can find at Parnassus Books.

0

It’s getting close to “Back to School” time and our kiddo is stepping up to get your young scholar ready for school with some great end of summer reading suggestions. Here are five-ish of her favorite reads she’s devoured this summer.

Share Your Smile by Raina Telgemeier

Have you ever thought about telling your own story, whether it be true or imagined? Are you interested in writing, drawing, or both? If the answers are yes, this fun, colorful, and the interactive journal is for you! With guidance from Raina herself, brainstorm ideas, make lists, paste in personal photos, and use your imagination like never before to create your own stories. For additional inspiration, special behind-the-scenes info from Raina’s own comics-making adventures is featured inside!

Is it an Accelerated Reader Book: No.

Why She Suggests this book: “I read the other books and loved them. This is about the making of those books that I loved.”

Morrigan Crow Book Series by Jessica Townsend

A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world–but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.

Is it an Accelerated Reader Book: Yes, “Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow” is an accelerated reader book as is “Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow.”

Why She Suggests this book: “I really like the trials in the series because they are exciting and adventurous. It’s like Harry Potter series. If you like that series you will like this one.”

Payback on Poplar Lane by Margaret Mincks

Twelve-year-old Peter Gronkowski prides himself on being a professional businessman. Tired of the clichéd lemonade stands that line his block, he decides to start a better business with the help of an intern. This is Book #1 and recently released is Book 2, President of Poplar Lane!

Is it an Accelerated Reader Book: Yes, “Payback on Poplar Lane’ is an accelerated reader book. “President of Poplar Lane” will soon be one.

Why She Suggests this book: “I like the twists and turns in the book. I also like how who is telling the story changes and you get to see how the other side of the tale looks from the other character.”

The Royal Rabbits of London Series by Santa Montefiore & Sebag Montefiore

Our reader has read all but the most recent book. In book one Shylo stumbles across a band of Ratzis and overhears their evil plan to take a photo of the Queen in her nightie. The coauthor is Simon Sebag Montefiore.

Is it an Accelerated Reader Book: Yes, The first book is an accelerated reader. Sadly, none of the others have been added to the database.

Why She Suggests this book: “I didn’t expect a little bunny who didn’t know anything would take me to London for an adventure. The story is really really fun to read. This is one of my favorite series because it’s more like a cartoon and the plot of book showed Shylo’s determination to be a Royal Rabbit and to save London.”

The Science of Breakable Things by Tae Keller

Middle-schooler Natalie’s yearlong assignment to answer a question using the scientific process leads to truths about her mother’s depression and her own cultural identity.

Is it an Accelerated Reader Book: Yes, The Science of Breakable Things is an accelerated Reader Book.

Why She Suggests this book: “It’s not like any story I’ve read recently. It’s more like a diary. What I liked about Natalie was she’s funny and she went through a lot of good and bad experiences in her life. I enjoyed her trying to figure out how to do the egg drop competition and getting into her Mom’s lab.”

All these books are currently for sale at Parnassus Books. Make sure to follow Parnassus on Facebook and Instagram. Visit their website to learn about author events in-store.

Nashville Buy Local’s 5 Must Eats In New England! #NashvilleBuyLocalTravels

0

Colorful culinary traditions are abundant in New England!

We’ve been to most of North America and each region has unique tastes that they have perfected. New England is one of those regions. Much like the South, Southwest and the Midwest the area has also been touched by immigration. That’s why the taste of Italy is still strong in the region and for our money, the best Italian we’ve ever tasted (we’ve never been to Italy though). Here are our five must-eats of New England:

1. Lobster Roll in Maine- The quintessential New England treat is the lobster roll. The best lobster roll in the World is the Maine lobster roll we had from The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Maine. The lobster is as fresh as you can get (they are pulling them off the back deck from the ocean), then steamed in ocean water. The meat is picked by hand. It’s served on a fresh round white roll that is baked daily 11 miles away at Reilly’s bakery in Biddeford, Maine. It’s served with an option of mayo, melted butter or if you want both! It’s no wonder why they sell as many as 500 of these per day! Located at 2 Western Ave, Kennebunk, ME 04043. Find their menu and more at their website.

2. Cannolis in Boston-  Italians in North Boston have left their mark on the city. Some great Pizza (Sadly, Galleria Umberto was closed for July when we were there) and pasta can be found in the Northern part of Beantown. One place stood out to us though, Mike’s Pastry. I didn’t even know I loved Cannoli’s so much until I bit into one of these. Fresh cannoli shells filled with ricotta cheese. But it doesn’t stop there. They also provide the flavors of Italy: Limoncello, Amaretto, hazelnut, and pistachio. BUT WAIT, there’s more. Oreo, mint chip, chocolate dipped, pecan caramel and the list goes on. Cases upon cases of fresh cannoli, just waiting to be boxed up and enjoyed. We visited the 300 Hanover St, Boston, MA 02113 location. Find out more and their other location by visiting their website

3. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven- This is one of the best and oldest pizzerias in the United States. (See our Pizza post from a bit back where we put them only behind Detroit’s Buddy’s Pizza) They have been doing it the same way since 1925—baked in a coal-fired brick pizza oven. They are most known for their white clam pie—crust, olive oil, oregano, grated cheese, chopped garlic, and fresh littleneck clams. This is not our cup of tea due to our not liking clams that much. It was delicious (for clams), we preferred the tomato pie—tomatoes, grated pecorino Romano cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil. YUMMMM!!!!! Plus, we had a bacon and cheese that would knock your socks off. The location we went to was located at 157 Wooster St, New Haven, CT 06511. Find their menu and other locations on their website.

4. Seafood in Salem- The Clam Shack in Salem was a very lucky find for us. We just happened upon this delicious seafood shack by chance as we were driving around Salem after learning about witches. Well, this seafood was enchanting. It quickly became one of our favorites of the trip. Fresh seafood, perfect views of the bay and the best clam chowder I’ve ever tasted! They are located at 98 Restaurant Row, Salem, MA 01970.

5. Italian food on Cape Cod- Finding Montano’s Restaurant in North Truro, Massachusetts out on the Cape was a total accident. The perfect ending to a scenic day and driving around Cape Cod. This is what you would assume the best Italian cuisine would taste like! Why? Because it is! This place boasts made from scratch, fresh pasta, and pizza dough. It’s easy to see why it’s a local favorite. They are located at 481 US-6, North Truro, MA 02652. Find out more on their website.

Get Ready for the Baby’s Arrival with Blooma Nashville Yoga!

We recently discovered Blooma Nashville. I know, how did we not know. We’re always hearing about things after so many already know. Pass along companies like Blooma.

Their Story by Blooma:

Blooma Nashville Yoga is a locally-owned sister studio to Blooma Inc., which is based in Minneapolis. Blooma Nashville Director Jennifer Derryberry Mann has been part of the Blooma Inc. family from the very beginning, when she helped dear friend & Blooma founder Sarah Longacre Ehlers bring the vision for a prenatal/postnatal yoga studio into being in 2007. After helping open the doors to Blooma Minneapolis, Jenni taught there for two years, falling deeply in love with the support, the community, and the connection to birth, babies, and women becoming mothers.

When Jenni and her family moved to the South shortly after the birth of their second child, Jenni deeply felt the loss of the Blooma community. The support and love she’d experienced there was her introduction to the importance of self-care. The next two years of motherhood — with two little ones and a dose of postpartum depression — set the stage for the birth of Blooma Nashville Yoga in 2014.

Jenni is honored to hold space for women becoming mothers in Nashville. It is a blessing to join together with yoga teachers, wellness professionals, educators, and passionate mama advocates to weave a sweet web of Blooma love here in middle Tennessee! The studio brings together the most helpful resources for pregnancy, birth, parenting, and women’s continued self-care and self-discovery.

We can’t wait to welcome you in person! In the meantime, please sign up for our newsletter, join our Facebook community, connect with us on Instagram, and get our latest on Twitter.

We love what they are doing to help with the health and wellness of the mothers, children, and newborns in the Music City. Follow their Facebook page for events and below is a list of classes to sign up for this week:

Better Flexibility with Yoga

If you ask people why they exercise, most will say to stay healthy, keep fit, or because it makes them feel good. Not a lot will mention flexibility as a goal, but it’s a key part of maintaining your health and avoiding injury, especially as you age. We’re very excited about the week ahead and the opportunity is given by Hot Yoga of East Nashville:
