The Frist Presents: “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection.”

It’s coming to the Frist THIS WEEK! “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection.” We’re way too excited about May 24–September 2, 2019 at The Frist Art Museum!

Frist Museum description:

This exhibition captures the vitality and expressiveness of twentieth-century Mexican art with iconic works by Frida Kahlo, her husband Diego Rivera, and their contemporaries, including Manuel Álvarez Bravo, María Izquierdo, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Among the more than 150 works on view will be seven painted self-portraits by Kahlo, Rivera’s Calla Lily Vendor, and numerous portraits of the Gelmans, plus more than fifty photographs that provide insight into Kahlo and Rivera’s passionate love affair and how the couple lived, worked, and dressed.

Husband-and-wife collectors Jacques and Natasha Gelman were glamorous and wealthy Eastern European refugees who married in Mexico in 1941, took part in Mexico City’s vibrant art scene, and acquired art mostly from their artist friends. In 1943, Jacques commissioned a full-length portrait of Natasha from Rivera, Mexico’s most celebrated painter. “The Gelmans formed close friendships with many artists in this exhibition, often acting as patrons and promoters of their careers and assembling one of the finest collections of modern Mexican art in the world along the way,” says Frist Art Museum curator Trinita Kennedy.

Born in 1907 in Coyoacán, a suburb south of Mexico City, Kahlo had a difficult childhood, facing a bout with polio at age six and a bus accident at the age of 18 that left her disabled and often bedridden. “It was during her recovery from the accident that Kahlo began to paint, in part because she was bored in bed. She spent hours alone with an easel and a mirror painting her own face,” says Kennedy. “She never attended art school, but as she considered a career as an artist, she sought out several of Mexico’s leading painters, including Rivera, whom she had met several years earlier.” Their friendship became a courtship, with the two marrying in 1929. Unfaithful to each other, the pair divorced in 1939, only to remarry in 1940.

In the early twentieth century, Mexico’s artistic avant-garde was closely tied to political and social revolution. Following Mexico’s civil war from 1910 to 1920, the government enlisted male painters to produce monumental murals in public buildings. Rivera was a revered figure in this muralism movement and an avowed Communist. “Using art, which could be understood by the masses, Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros and others helped Mexico fashion a new identity rooted in its own unique history,” says Kennedy.

Rivera’s artistic works, as well as his vocal opinions on the role of art, would shape the development of Mexican culture throughout the first half of the twentieth century. “His depictions of Mexican traditions and everyday life soon came to epitomize Mexican culture at home and abroad, including the United States where he created murals in San Francisco, Detroit, and New York,” says Kennedy. Rivera also created easel paintings representing poignant scenes of everyday life and labor in Mexico, such as Calla Lily Vendor, a luminous painting that celebrates the beauty and strength of Mexico and its people.

Like Rivera, Kahlo infused her work with mexicanidad, an identification with Mexico’s distinct national history, traditions, culture, and natural environment, but in a much more personal way. About a third of her paintings are self-portraits, the works for which she is now most celebrated. They accentuate her distinctive appearance, characterized by a v-shaped unibrow, deep brown eyes, mustache, carefully coiffed hair with braids, and indigenous Mexican clothing. In Diego on My Mind(Self-Portrait as Tehuana), for example, she crowns herself with a festive indigenous Mexican headdress known as a resplandor.

Known primarily in artistic circles during her lifetime, Kahlo’s paintings began to attract widespread international attention in the decades following her death. Her work and life story continued to resonate in pop culture with the success of Frida, a 1983 biography by Hayden Herrera, and the 2002 biopic Frida, starring Salma Hayek.

The exhibition includes more than fifty photographs of Kahlo, most of which were taken by noted photographers, such as Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Edward Weston. There is also a special gallery focused on Kahlo’s unique personal style, which offers insight into her wardrobe, hairstyles, and jewelry. An interactive touchscreen allows visitors to explore elements of her clothing and to learn why she wore them. The exhibition concludes with haunting black-and-white photographs of Kahlo’s crutches, corset, and bed, taken recently at the Casa Azul, her former home in Coyoacán, by contemporary artists, including Patti Smith. “Directly associated with her pain, these objects are venerated as relics,” says Kennedy. “As the photos attest, Kahlo’s ability to create magical paintings despite the suffering caused by her broken body captivates and inspires many of us today.”

The works collected by the Gelmans offer an unrivaled opportunity to encounter the chaotic and creative Mexican art world of the first half of the twentieth century in all its complexity. Modern Mexican art exerted a key influence on modern art in the United States, and its impact continues to be felt throughout the world today.

Things To Eat in Quebec 2019! Nashville Buy Local’s Six Must Do List. #NashvilleBuyLocalTravels

Recently we told you about some of the fun places to visit in Quebec. While there are loads of fun things to do in Quebec, Canada, there are also lots of tasty bites that you should not miss that aren’t poutine. Here are some of our favorites:

1. La BucheLa Buche (which translates “The Log”) is located in the heart of Old Quebec. It offers traditional Quebec cuisine. Very similar to a sugar shack experience if you are familiar with that experience. It offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as maple taffy on snow! This is not a Vegan restaurant. It’s very meat heavy and is an homage to the logging and trapping past of Quebec. It’s also got an artistic niche as you will find out if you use the restroom here. If you are looking for a traditional local experience full of comforting, home-cooked dishes, then you’ve got to try La Buche. Our Recommendation: Quebec Shepperd’s Pie Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes, Creamy Corn, Bacon, Red-Wine-Braised Beef and Fruit Ketchup!

2. St. Viateur Bagels– This bagel is like no other bagel I have ever had the pleasure of biting into. I would even say that when compared to NYC bagels. Also, I would say they are better than Fairmount Bagels in Montreal. Good news, Fairmount is a couple blocks over so do a taste test. We did. These are smaller, thinner, sweeter, topped with sesame seeds. These bagels are handmade and wood-fire baked. Just delicious. They are a ‘must try’ when visiting Quebec’s largest city, Montreal. Our Recommendation: Get enough for the room.

3. Erabliere du Lac-BeauportWe have never felt more southern in a foreign land. This sugar shack will make you feel close to your Tennessee, Alabama or Kentucky kin even if they aren’t there. It begins with a family style meal you are going to recognize instantly from your family get-togethers. The difference is that this one has pure maple syrup added to every dish. Sit back and enjoy some local entertainment (much like our region is very bluegrass in nature) and then head outside for some maple taffy on ice. This sugar shack also has a maple museum and a gift shop loaded with maple delights. It also has a taxidermy museum. These are our people and a truly Canadian experience. Our Recommendation: Get reservations. This place is packed with schools etc and it’s a must to call ahead.

4. Paillard Cafe-BoulangerieEveryone dreams of the perfect Parisian cafe. This cafe delivers. Serving delicious homemade bread, pastries, sandwiches, soups, and gelato. Located in Old Quebec and is a nice respite from shopping and sight-seeing. It also gives you a chance to gaze out the window and dream. The patrons seemed to be having a great time, laughing and conversing with their tablemates without a cell phone or laptop in sight! Something much of Quebec does. They wait till they leave their meal to post on Instagram. Stop by for a latte and pastry—they are divine! Our Recommendation: Latte and whatever bread tickles your fancy.

5. Cassis Monna & FillesA short drive out of Quebec and past the Montmorency Falls is the Île d’Orléans. A wonderful farming town on an Island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. This small island could pack a connoisseurs vacation with wine and cheese makers. Île d’Orléans is where you get that very French inspired Quebec. Cassis Monna & Filles are without a doubt Black Currant experts! There are a thousand and one ways to enjoy black currant and you will find most if not all at Cassis Monna & Filles. From black currant wine, syrups, jams, gelatos and sorbets, they are true local artisans. This 5th generation family business should be on your list. Enjoy a glass as the St. Lawrence river passes by off in the distance. Our Recommendation: If you have kids grab the gelato. If you don’t spend some time downstairs trying the different wines and enjoying the view of the farm.

6. The Cheese Stops in Charlevoix- North of Quebec City and on the way to whale watching (we talked about it in our last travel blog) in Baie St. Catherine are some of the best stops for cheese in all of North America. There are trails of cheese at local farms all over Charlevoix County. The two we visited are from our research two of the best. The one we first stopped at is a working Sheep farm with sheep’s milk cheese called Famille Migneron. The secret of their cheese lies in the care given to their ripening. During this process of maturation, nothing is left to chance. Maurice Dufour and his team deploy their know-how so that each of their creations becomes what it should be: prodigious and unique. The second stop was Laiterie Charlevoix Lévis. I preferred the cheese made from the ewes but the service and humor from Laiterie Charlevoix Levis was worth the trip. The gentleman discussed driving through our area on the way to Florida and Alabama. Made jokes about the region as he fed us his wonderful cheese. It was an amazing time to enjoy the best cheese we’ve tasted in North America.

There is so much to eat in Quebec and narrowing it down was difficult. If you have suggestions, let us know in the comments.

Music City Mondays at Belcourt Theatre Presents on May 27th the 1973 Classic, “AMERICAN GRAFFITI.”

0

A summer night in 1962 becomes the focal point in the lives of four small-town California teenagers as they face decisions, both immediate and long term, about the directions of their lives. Steve wants to break up with Laurie, his devoted high school sweetheart, and pursue new experiences away from home. Curt is hesitant about going away to school and leaving the comfortable surroundings of family and friends. John tries to maintain his ‘too cool for school’ image as a hip guy, but can’t seem to shake a nagging awareness that life is somehow passing him by. Finally, there’s Terry, the nerdy wannabe trying to fit who still manages to screw up. During the course of the evening, their stories intertwine and separate, and by the next morning, their lives will be changed—some only temporarily and some for a lifetime.

Part of Music City Mondays. Showtimes posted the Monday prior to opening.

Welcome to the most European feeling and looking province in North America…Quebec, Canada. We speak very little French but the locals in the province also speak English and are very helpful, so it’s the best of both worlds! We spent most of our time in Quebec City so it is skewed to that great city. You will love wandering around the old town of Quebec City. It has fantastic architecture that makes you feel like you’re in France. There’s a lot to do but it still has a small town feel. It’s nice and cool in the Summer but if you love the Winter, it’s also a great spot for amazing winter decorations and lots of SNOW!

Here are our Top 6 Things To Do In Quebec:

1. La Citadelle de Quebec- Watch the changing of the guard at La Citadelle de Quebec. This is a ceremony that takes place daily. It marks the arrival of new sentries to relieve those on duty at the garrison. It’s a colorful military tradition and includes the regimental mascot Bastisse the Goat, dressed in his finest!

2. Old Quebec- Walk around the Chateau Frontenac and admire the beautiful architecture and grounds. This hotel is one of the most photographed hotels in the world. As you gaze upon its vastness and beauty, you will quickly understand why. You can also watch Quebec’s beloved street performers (Buskers) that perform outside the hotel. They are truly talented and worth stopping to watch their talent and skill. Catch a quick ride on the Old Quebec Funicular, a funicular railway that links the upper town with the lower town, for a unique experience. The architecture is breathtaking. Peppered through the city are many intricate murals. These murals show off the artistic nature of Quebec. Also, don’t miss out on visiting one of the oldest churches in North America, Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. It served as a filming location for the movie ‘Catch Me If You Can’ for the film’s final scene!

3. Waterfalls- Behold the Montmorency Waterfalls. The spectacular 275-feet tall falls on the Montmorency River. Fun fact, Montmorency Waterfalls tower higher than Niagara Falls! You can enjoy the beauty of the Falls from the ground, on a walkway at the top of the Falls, from the street as you drive by or Zip Line right in front of the Falls! Talk about a scenic view!

Whale Watching- All Aboard! Get ready for some amazing sights as you board the Croisieres AML for a Whale watching tour in Baie-Sainte-Catherine, Quebec. If you’re looking for a truly unique and memorable experience, this is it! Enjoy breathtaking landscapes banked on both the St. Lawrence and Rivière Saguenay. Be prepared with your camera ready to shoot as you encounter many species of whales. We repeat don’t forget your camera and be prepared to have a spotter! Side note: This ship has the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted! Ahoy Chocolate Deliciousness.

5. Shopping- Quebec City has beautiful streets filled with local boutiques, art galleries, and gourmet food shops. The Petit Champlain District is North America’s oldest shopping district. It’s filled with artisanal boutiques and decorative art shops. The rue Saint-Jean District boasts delightfully original local shops. You are sure to find the perfect Québécois souvenir here. The Old Port is for the antique lovers and the Art District has a lively atmosphere. If you are a foodie don’t worry as there are many gourmet food shops. The Farmer’s Markets here are absolument parfait (absolutely perfect)! Grab a fresh croissant or baguette from one of the many French local boulangers/bakers. As you enjoy your baguette or chocolate croissant take a stroll through the market.  There you will find the freshest produce and flowers. You will be magically transported to France. Or, perhaps, you are more of a mall person. While our malls seem to be dissolving in the United States, Quebec’s malls are thriving. In fact, Quebec malls feel like the 1990’s malls of our past—including merchandise from our 1990’s malls! Anyone remember Bombay Company and smoking cigarettes at the entryway? It was truly a step back in time.

6. Lavender fields at Bleu Lavande- Quebec City was our base and we left for New England (which we’ll cover on a later post) after our time in QC ended. Driving about 280km south (3-hour drive) toward Interstate 91 in the United States happens to sit a farm. The Bleu Lavande company farm that produces natural lavender products. The thing is the farm also has a wonderful store, fields for Instagram photos, massage tables (yes, a full massage with the scent of Lavender fields around you), Cafe, tours and more. It’s a must stop to buy products (which we are still using) and to support the local farmers of southern Quebec. Plus, look out for the Witch House” in Fitch Bay.

We hope this is a list to help you get started on your trip to Quebec. One of our favorite trips of recent summer family vacations. Feel free to email us for more suggestions at NashvilleBuyLocal@Gmail.com
