Descriptions From Hot Yoga of East Nashville

HOT 26

Hot-26 (Bikram Method Yoga) a series of 26 postures completed in a room heated to 100 to 105 degrees at approximately 40% humidity. The heat is helpful in allowing the body to go deeper into the postures safely by increasing the elasticity of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, allowing greater flexibility with a lower risk of injury. The heat also facilitates sweating and detoxification through the pores and skin – the body’s largest eliminating organ. The heat also greatly increases the challenge to the cardiovascular system, allowing for a challenging workout and greater fitness levels to be achieved. Finally, the intensity of the heat deepens the need for concentration and focus, strengthening the student’s willpower and self-control both in the classroom and beyond.

The Hot-26 discipline is an excellent way to develop and maintain a healthy body – it works as a preventative medicine by improving the immune system; detoxifying the muscles, lungs and organs; and preventing arthritis, back pain, and injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons.

In addition, Hot-26 classes will help regulate weight and/or bring bodies to a healthy weight – each 90-minute class burning between 500 to 1100 calories. The self-control and focus developed in the class will be transferred to all areas of one’s life to improve overall mental and physical health.

POWER YOGA – FLOW

Power Yoga (Vinyasa Flow) yoga is offered for a variety in one’s workout routine. Power Flow classes are taught in a slightly heated room (85 to 90 degrees). The classes and postures are unique and new every day. In this style of yoga, the students flow dynamically between postures, gaining a fun/spontaneous yoga experience.

Power Yoga classes combine standing postures, sun salutations, and floor postures for an energizing, cardiovascular, full-body workout. Power Flow classes combine breath control with postures designed to strengthen the body, develop flexibility and improve stamina. Students note improved core and upper body strength and toning.

Power Yoga classes are fitness-driven and excellent for regulating weight and/or bring bodies to a healthy weight – each 60-minute class burning between 450 to 600 calories.

BUTI YOGA

Buti Yoga is a dynamic practice of vinyasa and hatha yoga sequences with added movement + Cardio-intensive bursts of Tribal Dance and primal movement. Prepare to loose your inhibitions and have a crazy amount of fun!  Buti Yoga utilizes the Spiral Structure Technique to sculpt + tone the deep abdominal muscles that stabilize and strengthen the body. Instead of linear movements, the spiral structure technique and other Buti yoga movements challenge the body along all planes of motion.

9 To 5 This Music City Monday’s Feature at Belcourt Theatre, April 29th!

0

Away from the offices of Consolidated Industries, three secretaries (Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin) spend a night sharing a joint while entertaining fantasies of killing their chauvinist boss (Dabney Coleman). When one of them panics the following day because she suspects she’s really poisoned the tyrant, the trio respond by abducting him and running the business themselves.

As for 9 TO 5 as part of our ongoing Music City Mondays, is Dolly Parton’s namesake #1 hit enough to justify inclusion? Consider that it not only went on to be adapted for both a TV series and a Broadway musical while launching Parton—already an established singer/songwriter—into a permanent icon of pop culture—and the answer to that question is an emphatic “Atta Girl!

“[Dolly Parton] is, on the basis of this one film, a natural-born movie star, a performer who holds our attention so easily that it's hard to believe it's her first film. There have been other debuts this unmistakable; you could name Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, John Travolta. And what you'd be talking about in each case would not necessarily be a great dramatic performance in an important movie. You'd be talking about a quality of presence, a personal life force that seems to take over the screen.” —Roger Ebert (1980)

Part of Music City Mondays at The Belcourt Theatre this Monday! Make sure to bring a crew and watch Dolly, Lilly and Jane take on toxic masculinity!

While riding the trolley on St. Charles in New Orleans we were greeted by the smiling face Mignon Francois, Founder of The Cupcake Collection. Not in person but on a billboard inside the trolley. It reminded us of home and the fact one of our great local entrepreneurs has a location in the Music and Crescent City. It’s awesome to see her expand her business into her hometown. That said, have you tried any of their favorite flavors? Our’s is Sweet Potato but there are so many more (as they describe below):

Parnassus Author event with Susan Crawford author of “Fiber.”

0

We’re very interested in the discussion with Susan Crawford. This Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 6:30pm the discussion will center around her book, “Fiber: The Coming Tech Revolution – And Why America Might Miss It.”

A little about the author and the book

The world of fiber optic connections reaching neighborhoods, homes, and businesses will represent as great a change from what came before as the advent of electricity. The virtually unlimited amounts of data we’ll be able to send and receive through these hair-thin strands of glass will enable a degree of virtual presence that will radically change health care, education, urban administration and services, agriculture, retail sales, and offices. Yet all these transformations will pale compared with the innovations and new industries that we can’t even imagine today.

In Fiber: The Coming Tech Revolution—And Why America Might Miss It a fascinating account combining policy expertise and compelling on-the-ground reporting, Susan Crawford reveals how the giant corporations that control internet access in the United States use their tremendous lobbying power to tilt the playing field against competition, holding back the infrastructure improvements and competitive pressures necessary for the country to move forward. As a result, the U.S. is swiftly falling behind countries in Asia and Northern Europe—particularly China, which is aggressively moving to ensure 80% of all homes and businesses have cheap, world-class fiber connections in the next few years.

But it’s not all bad news: Crawford also takes the reader to some of the 700-plus cities and small towns across the United States that are building their own municipal fiber networks—a technology that is near-infinite in its capacity to transport data swiftly and seamlessly around the globe. The end result are communities that are well-suited to meet the needs of tomorrow in business, education, healthcare, and lifestyle—at a tiny fraction of the price the cable monopolies charge for far inferior service. As Sen. John McCain said about municipal fiber networks, “[W]e cannot afford to cut off any successful strategy if we want to remain internationally competitive.”

“We routinely underestimate the long-term impact of any new fundamental technology, and I suspect any guesses of mine about the effects of fiber will similarly fall short,” Crawford writes. “We are already seeing dramatic improvements in agricultural productivity that have been driven by fiber-to-farm… Fiber and advanced wireless capability will allow us to manage our use of energy and incorporate renewable resources into local and national power grids… With a large enough consumer market, we could see vastly expanded retail opportunities that allow sellers and buyers to touch and feel goods at a distance… With fiber you can work where you live, not the other way around… New forms of collaboration among musicians and other artists will emerge over fiber.” The possibilities—much like fiber’s data-transmitting abilities—are nearly endless. Crucially, telemedicine requires fiber. So does a first-class education.

FIBER offers an important explanation for why America’s internet access is so terrible and so expensive—but also shows us that this is not the way it has to be. Crawford also makes a strong case for access to the internet to be overseen by the public, like water and electricity, to ensure everyone has equal, excellent access to this critical resource.

Susan Crawford is the John A. Reilly Clinical Professor at Harvard Law School, and a contributor to WIRED. She lives in New York City and Cambridge, Mass. You can read more about the author at  www.scrawford.net

Important Discussion

Even though we are in a city this topic of connecting our country is vital. If we want to remain a strong place to live and work in the centuries ahead we must face the fact many of our own fellow citizens are not cnnected at an affordable price as they should be.
