Great Vinyl Selections for Dad on Father’s Day at The Groove Nashville!

0

Dad loves things that are classic and “only sound good on my record player.” The guys at The Groove Nashville got with us and here are some selections that every Dad could agree is worth spending time digging to find and adding to their collection.

God’s Favorite Customer by Father John Misty

We’ve listened to the title track so we can’t really review it for you. That said, we like the way that first track sounds and it is sure to make any fan of Joshua Tillman happy.

“Bleach” by Nirvana

29 Years ago today “Bleach” hit many of our hands and we had zero clue as to Nirvana was. Sure this was not the album that made them famous. A few of us who were fortunate enough to hear this in 1989 knew music was changing. The hair and make-up was going away and we learned how to spot the “Puget Sound” on the map. The Dad who loves 1990s rock will love this.

“Our Raw Heart” by Yob

Another great gift for the Dad who loves Rock. Yob brings the Doom Rock from Oregon to Music City with this well executed album. Not our speed but our friends who’ve enjoyed their work in the past tell us how great it is. Even after they had already told us. So, that should let you know your Metal loving Dad will enjoy this one.

Anything Jason Isbell

Sports writers, Song writers and everyone who’s lived within 80 miles of I-65 South of Louisville, Kentucky (What’s wrong with you Indiana) loves Jason Isbell. So much I am sure his Ryman date(s) will sell out in minutes today at 10am when they go on sale at Ryman.com. That said, Dad would love any of these albums and they are available at The Groove. We’re partial to “Something More Than Free” because of “Speed Trap Town.”

Parallel Lines by Blondie

She’s Classic. The Album is Classic. The Music is Classic. If you don’t get this for Dad get it for yourself.

Anything by Liz Phair

If your Dad did go to college in the 1990s he’s definitely going to want all of these albums by Liz Phair.

Hyptonize- The Notorious B.I.G.

This beat bangs on this one. The 20th anniversary Edition release of Notorious B.I.G’s single Hypnotize. Originally released as the first single from his album Life After Death on March 1, 1997. It was the last song he released in his lifetime, as he was killed a week later. It was the fifth song by a credited artist to hit number one posthumously. It was ranked at number 30 on Rolling Stone’s 50 greatest rap songs of all time in hip hop history.

Phantom Thread Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Totally our opinion but the movie had an odd plot. That said it was beautiful. One of the reasons it was so beautiful was Jonny Greenwood’s score. As elegant as the cinematography. This is going to delight the Father who prefers a night at the Schermerhorn over a bar.

Also, come join The Groove Nashville for the inaugural Mono Mingler. This is an evening with free beer (provided by Southern Grist Brewing Co), games, DJ Mele spinning and of course face to face fun. Leave that phone in your pocket and come enjoy old fashioned face time.

Her Bookshop for Father’s Day: 16 Books Dad will Love.

0

Her Bookshop is ready to make His Day. This Father’s Day say “I love you Dad”with a wonderful book. Joelle has curated a beautiful collection of books for purchase that are visually stunning and intellectually satisfying. Here are a few Joelle suggested for Father’s Day:

“How to Grill Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Flame-Cooked Food” by Mark Bittman

Here’s how to grill absolutely everything—from the perfect steak to cedar-plank salmon to pizza—explained in Mark Bittman’s trademark simple, straightforward style. Featuring more than 250 recipes and hundreds of variations, plus Bittman’s practical advice on all the grilling basics, this book is an exploration of the grill’s nearly endless possibilities. Recipes cover every part of the meal, including appetizers, seafood, meat and poultry, vegetables (including vegetarian mains), and even desserts. Plenty of quick, high-heat recipes will get dinner on the table in short order (Spanish-Style Garlic Shrimp, Green Chile Cheeseburgers); low and slow “project” recipes (Texas-Style Smoked Brisket, Pulled Pork with Lexington BBQ Sauce) are ideal for leisurely weekend cookouts. You’ll also find unexpected grilled treats like avocado, watermelon, or pound cake, and innovative surprises—like how to cook paella or bake a whole loaf of bread on the grill—to get the most out of every fire.

Pops: Fatherhood in Pieces Book by Michael Chabon

“Magical prose stylist” Michael Chabon (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) delivers a collection of essays—heartfelt, humorous, insightful, wise—on the meaning of fatherhood.

A History of Video Games in 64 Objects Book by World Video Game Hall of Fame

Inspired by the groundbreaking A History of the World in 100 Objects, this book draws on the unique collections of The Strong museum in Rochester, New York, to chronicle the evolution of video games, from Pong to first-person shooters, told through the stories of dozens of objects essential to the field’s creation and development.

Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977-2002 by David Sedaris

“If it’s hard to be funny, it’s an astounding feat to stay funny–wildly, wickedly, ingeniously so–for more than twenty years. Yet
David Sedaris has somehow pulled it off, in exhilarating essays that zero in on the absurd and the poignant with eviscerating wit and radiant humanity….Fans will no doubt delight in the entries that will turn into Sedaris’s most beloved essays…We’re treated to a portrait of the artist as a young man, albeit one with an old and singular soul.”
Fiona MaazelO, The Oprah Magazine

Calypso by David Sedaris

If you’ve ever laughed your way through David Sedaris’s cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you’re getting with Calypso. You’d be wrong.  When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it’s impossible to take a vacation from yourself.

Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches by John Hodgman

“I love everything about this hilarious book except the font size . . . can a fella get a 16 point Helvetica up in this thing.”
—Jon Stewart

South’s Best Butts: Pitmaster Secrets for Southern Barbecue Perfection by Matt Moore

In The South’s Best Butts, food writer and Southern gentleman, Matt Moore, waves away clouds of smoke to give barbecue-lovers a sneak peek into the kitchens and smokehouses of a handful of the Barbecue Belt’s most revered pitmasters. He uncovers their tried-and-true techniques gleaned over hours, days, and years toiling by fire and spit, coaxing meltingly tender perfection from the humble pig—the foundation of Southern BBQ. More than a book of recipes, Matt explores how the marriage of meat, cooking method, and sauce varies from place to place based on history and culture, climate, available ingredients and wood, and always the closely-guarded, passed-down secrets followed like scripture. Because no meat plate is complete in the South without “all the fixin’s” to round out the meal, Matt cues up patron-sanctioned recipes from every establishment he visits. One thing is for certain…this book will change the way you cook, smoke, grill, and eat, but be warned: Your own butt may suffer in the process.

People Fishing A Century of Photographs by Barbara Levine, Paige Ramey

Although people have fished for food since the dawn of time, fishing today is one of the most popular pastimes in the world–an estimated 220 million people worldwide are recreational anglers, according to the World Bank. While many enjoy the Zen of waiting patiently for a strike in the great outdoors, for others, at least judging from this quirky collection of fishermen and women fishing is clearly a time of great fun, even hilarity. In this follow-up to her delightful People Knitting, photo archivist and collector Barbara Levine, along with Paige Ramey, netted these curious, humorous, and sometimes outrageous photos of Edwardian dowagers, tiny babies, sunburned sportsmen, and bathing beauties preparing tackle boxes, casting their lures, and displaying the catch of the day. A tribute to this perennial outdoor pastime, this is the perfect gift for the fisher in your life.

Shark Drunk: The Art of Catching a Large Shark from a Tiny Rubber Dinghy in a Big Ocean
Book by Morten Andreas Strøksnes

The Lofoten islands in Norway are as isolated and forbidding as they are majestic. In this true story, two friends, the author and the eccentric artist Hugo Aasjord, set out onto the icy waters surrounding the islands. Their quest: to pursue the infamous Greenland shark—a massive creature that can grow to twenty-six feet in length and more than a ton in weight—from a tiny rubber boat. But the shark is not known for its size alone: its meat contains a toxin that, when consumed, has been known to make people drunk and hallucinatory. Together, the two men tackle existential questions, survive the world’s most powerful maelstrom, and, yes, get drunk, as they attempt to understand the ocean from every possible angle, drawing on poetry, science, history, ecology, mythology, and their own, sometimes intoxicated, observations.

Look Big: And Other Tips for Surviving Animal Encounters of All Kinds by Rachel Levin

“LOOK BIG is the definitive guide for anyone who has ever wondered what to do in an animal encounter. With equal parts humor and sound advice, Rachel Levin provides all the info you need to defuse a major critter crisis. Just don’t run. Unless it’s an alligator.” —Chris Keyes, editor of Outside magazine

The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights and Other Appreciations by John McCain

“You can see McCain in this book struggling to reconcile himself to what his Republican Party has largely become…The six-term senator from Arizona slips in a few careful mentions of Donald J. Trump, and expresses concern about the rancor that has overtaken the country…He consistently returns again and again to what seems for him to be a core commitment: a fervent belief in American exceptionalism…his faith in his country’s beneficence remains undimmed.” —Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times

Creative Quest by Questlove

The United States of Absurdity: Untold Stories from American History by Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds

The creators of the podcast The Dollop present illustrated profiles of the weird, outrageous, NSFW, and downright absurd tales from American history that you weren’t taught in school. The United States of Absurdity presents short, informative, and hilarious stories of the most outlandish (but true) people, events, and more from United States history. Comedians Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds cover the weird stories you didn’t learn in history class, such as 10-Cent Beer Night, the Jackson Cheese, and the Kentucky Meat Shower, accompanied by full-page illustrations that bring each historical “milestone” to life in full-color.

Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders
by Dylan Thuras, Ella Morton, and Joshua Foer

It’s time to get off the beaten path. Inspiring equal parts wonder and wanderlust, Atlas Obscura celebrates over 700 of the strangest and most curious places in the world. Talk about a bucket list: here are natural wonders–the dazzling glowworm caves in New Zealand, or a baobob tree in South Africa that’s so large it has a pub inside where 15 people can drink comfortably. Architectural marvels, including the M.C. Escher-like stepwells in India. Mind-boggling events, like the Baby Jumping Festival in Spain, where men dressed as devils literally vault over rows of squirming infants. Not to mention the Great Stalacpipe Organ in Virginia, Turkmenistan’s 40-year hole of fire called the Gates of Hell, a graveyard for decommissioned ships on the coast of Bangladesh, eccentric bone museums in Italy, or a weather-forecasting invention that was powered by leeches, still on display in Devon, England.

A Little History of the World by Ernst Gombrich

E. H. Gombrich’s bestselling history of the world for young readers tells the story of mankind from the Stone Age to the atomic bomb, focusing not on small detail but on the sweep of human experience, the extent of human achievement, and the depth of its frailty. The product of a generous and humane sensibility, this timeless account makes intelligible the full span of human history. In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic bomb. In between emerges a colorful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of science. This is a text dominated not by dates and facts, but by the sweep of mankind’s experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity’s achievements and an acute witness to its frailties.

The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels by Jon Meacham

“Appalled by the ascendancy of Donald J. Trump, and shaken by the deadly white nationalist rallies in Charlottesville in 2017, Meacham returns to other moments in our history when fear and division seemed rampant. He wants to remind us that the current political turmoil is not unprecedented, that as a nation we have survived times worse than this. . . . Meacham tries to summon the better angels by looking back at when America truly has been great. He is effective as ever at writing history for a broad readership.”The New York Times Book Review

13 Gifts For Father’s Day on Fatherland from Gift Horse Nashville!

0

Finding a Father’s Day gift for your Dad is easy. Head over to Fatherland and see Jess and the gang as they have a wonderful array of gifts. Here are 13ish we think would be great to receive (this is a subtle hint to my nine year old).

The Gifts

Classic Country Dad

Anything Dolly Parton. This is for the Dad that thinks this new country is nothing but hot garbage. Seriously this is a strong move even if your Dad doesn’t like Dolly Parton. She’s the Patron Saint of Tennessee and the gesture alone will have him teary eyed (To be sure play Coat of Many Colors or Hard Candy Christmas in the background when giving the gift). That said, what man doesn’t love Dolly.

Camping Dad

We’re assuming here since roughing it for us is choosing a more rural VRBO on vacation. That said, these shot glasses, cups, mugs and journal are making me need bug spray. They are sure to make that camping/off round dad feel the smell of the Pine Trees and sounds of nature as he unwraps the gift.

Rock and Roll Dad

These are fine books for the Dad who loves the night life of Nashville.

  • Honky Tonk Portrait of Country Music– Forty years after Henry Horenstein began documenting the country music scene in and around Nashville, his deep love for the music and its people continues. Having spent a lifetime around performers and fans, he has been granted access to both the high-glamour backstage of the Grand Ole Opry in its heyday of the 1970s and the rough-and-tumble dive bars that carry on the tradition today.Horenstein’s 120 black-and-white photographs from 1972 through 2011 capture the irrepressible spirit of an American institution as it has evolved over the years. Familiar stars including Dolly Parton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ralph Stanley, and Tammy Wynette are seen here alongside the familiar venues and enthusiastic fans that sustained them. Originally published in paperback form, this new edition is the definitive monograph of Horenstein’s beloved honky tonk photographs. 120 photographs.
  • Whiskey: A Spirited Story with 75 Classic and Original Cocktails- After decades of being seen as an old man’s drink, whiskey is booming in popularity.  Craft distilleries are popping up all over the United States, making whiskeys not just from corn, rye, and malted barley, but also from grains such as quinoa, blue corn, and triticale. Cocktail lovers, moving away from sweet and fruity flavor profiles, have embraced the earthy, bitter, savory notes that come from the “brown” spirits. In this collection, Shrubs author Michael Dietsch reaches out to those cocktail drinkers with recipes both classic and original, in historical order.
  • Whiskey: A Spirited Story with 75 Classic and Original Cocktails- From modern craft cocktails to old standbys, prepare to shake, stir, and just plain pour your way through some of the best wax ever pressed. Wickedly designed and featuring photography throughout, Booze & Vinyl is organized by mood, from Rock to Chill, Dance, and Seduce. Each entry has liner notes that underscore the album’s musical highlights and accompanying “Side A” and “Side B” cocktail recipes that complement the music’s mood, imagery in the lyrics, or connect the drink to the artist. This is your guide to a rich listening session for one, two, or more.Among the 70 featured albums are: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club, Purple Rain, Sticky Fingers, Born To Run, License to Ill, Appetite for Destruction, Thriller, Like a Virgin, Low End Theory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Hotel California, Buena Vista Social Club, Back to Black, Pet Sounds, Vampire Weekend, and many more.
  • Rock Art: A Gig Poster Coloring Book- Imaginative and unique gig poster art to colorfully calm your mind…You’ve seen the concert and love the band, but it’s the quirky, original art of a gig poster that you really want. In Rock Art: A Gig Poster Coloring Book, two of today’s top gig poster artists, Boss Construction and Methane Studios, offer up a volume of their bewitching art for your coloring pleasure. They’ve done posters for some of the world’s most popular musical acts including The Dave Matthews Band, Ray Lamontagne, Tom Petty, Father John Misty, Luke Bryan, and many, many more, and now you can give their cutting edge art your own creative spin. Grab your colored pencils and markers, put on your favorite tunes, and chill out in the colorful world of gig poster art.
  • The Illustrated Art of Manliness: The Essential How-To Guide: Survival • Chivalry • Self-Defense • Style • Car Repair • And More!- Need we say more?
Retro Dad

Doesn’t matter if it’s classic cocktails or Soviet invention the Dad who is still living his best 1960s style life will love these books and recipes. Not to mention the cocktail towels and glassware is a great start for Dad. Maybe next year spring for the Conversation pit in the living room.

Father’s Day Cards

The cards from Gift Horse are next level. They have great cards for Dad and some for the Mom who had to also be Dad. Say “Thanks Dad” the best way possible. Say it with a gift and a card from Gift Horse Nashville!

More about Little Do We Know

Next-door neighbors and ex-best friends Hannah and Emory haven’t spoken in months. Not since the fight-the one where they said things they couldn’t take back. Now, Emory is fine-tuning her UCLA performing arts application and trying to make the most of the months she has left with her boyfriend, Luke, before they head off to separate colleges. Meanwhile, Hannah’s strong faith is shaken when her family’s financial problems come to light, and she finds herself turning to unexpected places-and people-for answers to the difficult questions she’s suddenly facing.

No matter how much Hannah and Emory desperately want to bridge the thirty-six steps between their bedroom windows, they can’t. Not anymore. Until their paths cross unexpectedly when, one night, Hannah finds Luke doubled over in his car outside her house. In the aftermath of the accident, all three struggle to understand what happened in their own ways. But when a devastating secret about Hannah and Emory’s argument ultimately comes to light, they must all reexamine the things they hold true.

In alternating chapters, a skeptic and a believer piece together the story of their complex relationship with help from the boy caught somewhere in the middle. New York Times bestselling author Tamara Ireland Stone deftly crafts a moving portrait of faith, love, and friendship.

More about City of Bastards

Safe from her murderous father in the dazzling capital of Lightspire, she lives a life of luxury under the protection of the Volaris King, alongside her boyfriend, Zell, and best friend, Princess Lyriana. So why isn’t she happy? Maybe it’s the whispers and stares that follow her wherever she goes, as the daughter of the traitor waging war against Lightspire. Or maybe it’s the memories of her beloved brother, Jax, who lies cold in his grave even as she tries to settle into a life in the city’s prestigious University.

Then Tilla stumbles upon the body of a classmate-a friend. The authorities are quick to rule it a suicide and sweep it under the rug, but when Tilla herself is attacked by a mysterious man with terrifying powers, she’s convinced of a conspiracy. Her friends beg her to stay silent; what she’s suggesting is impossible . . . and treasonous. But Tilla can’t — won’t — let it go. And the deeper she digs, the more questions she uncovers. How is the West beating the supposedly invincible Lightspire mages in battle? Is it connected to the shadowy cult wreaking havoc in Lightspire? Nothing is as it seems in the glorious capital, and Tilla’s presence might just be the spark that sets the Kingdom aflame.

Need to escape the madness of CMA Fest or Bonnaroo for a Bite To Eat?

It’s a party at the register

Locals know that this weekend in Music City is going to be crazy. Some folks may be in town to visit for CMA Fest and many more driving through to hit the fields of Bonnaroo. The City and the State are feeding the ear with Music. How about you let local dining spots feed your hunger. Here are our five to try while in town:

Terminal Cafe– Yup, we’re bias because we’ve recently done a giveaway with them. Then the fact they have the Be-Hive Seitan that helps us keep plant based as much as possible. For you meat eaters they have wonderful options as well. The coffee is great if you are hitting here for a breakfast or brunch. If you are at Terminal and leaving past 1pm hit KoKos Vegan Ice Cream a couple doors down for a sweet treat. 733 Porter Rd, Nashville, TN 37206. Wednesday 7AM–5PM Thursday 7AM–5PM Friday 7AM–5PM Saturday 8AM–2PM Sunday 8AM-2PM. About normal coffee house pricing but with a non pretentious attitude, fun staff and better food.

Peg Leg Porker– Yes, I just suggested a place that had vegan options. This place does not. Personally it’s our favorite BBQ when we fall off the wagon and allow a cheat day. Carey Bringle (Owner & recently seen on Netflix’s Ugly Delicious) and crew have made a great BBQ joint in the center of town that is far enough away from the mess of CMA Fest but close enough you can jump back in when ready. Not to mention, it’s dang good BBQ. 903 Gleaves St, Nashville, TN 37203 Wednesday 11AM–10PM Thursday 11AM–10PM Friday 11AM–10PM Saturday 11AM–10PM. I would say getting out of here paying $15-$20 means you ate well.

Carniceria Y Taqueria Don Juan- If you read our social media or have been here before you have heard us talk about this place. Recently a local real estate company posted a “Essential Taco Trail” list of Nashville. Not only were none of the shops owned by a hispanic owners. None of them are in the history and traditions of Mexico. You can not say that about Carniceria Y Taqueria Don Juan. Not only does Carniceria Y Taqueria Don Juan have a fantastic butcher shop (Carniceria) above the Taco Shop (Taqueria). They also have done it with making changes for Vegan types like us. They did it without losing any of the fantastic taste they brought across the border. If you have a better spot let us know. 2910 Nolensville Pike, Nashville, TN 37211. Wednesday 11AM–9PM Thursday 11AM–9PM Friday 11AM–10PM Saturday 11AM–10PM. This place is very inexpensive.

Prince’s Hot Chicken-Total disclosure, we’re bias about Hot Chicken. When we arrived to work in Nashville Radio in the early 2000s this was it. This was the place we were treated to and there was no going back if you wanted poultry of the hurtful variety. We’re weird as if we eat chicken Hot Chicken is not our favorite but of those that do it, Prince’s is our choice. Followed by Bolton’s Spicy Chicken & Fish. Those are the two. Skip the lines of recent pop-ups and try the people who have done it for a long time. Prince’s Hot Chicken: 123 Ewing Dr #3, Nashville, TN 37207. Wednesday 11:30AM–11:30PM Thursday 11:30AM–11:30PM Friday 11:30AM–4AM Saturday 2PM–4AM. There is a South location but this is the one I went to long ago. The prices are just right and worth every penny.

Monell’s Dining and Catering- Friends from Chicago came to visit us so we had to take them to our Chicken Spot. Sure, it’s not hot. Didn’t matter. It was Sunday. Our table mates arrived from Churches and Clubs. Nashville all in one table enjoying the food of our southern history. Differing backgrounds both racial, socioeconomic and even region. It was a blast. Let’s be honest, the Chicken and biscuits at Monell’s are why I came but I keep coming back for the sides. Worth it if you are willing to relax while you wait. Grab a coffee and grab a spot to wait for a great Nashville meal. 2601, 1235 6th Ave N, Nashville, TN 37208. Wednesday 8AM–3PM, 5–8:30PM Thursday 8AM–3PM, 5–8:30PM Friday 8AM–3PM, 5–8:30PM Saturday 8AM–3PM, 5–8:30PM ALSO Saturday Night Midnight-3AM Sunday 8AM-4PM.

We hope you enjoy the city. Don’t forget to tag us what local spots you do try at #NashvilleBuyLocal on Instagram. You can also direct message us there or on Facebook.
